Visa reason code 12.7: invalid data

Visa 12.7 is a processing-error dispute: the authorization was obtained with invalid or incorrect data, or the merchant category code in the authorization didn’t match the one in settlement. The bank has 75 days to file.

Key takeaways

  • It’s about the data behind the approval. Wrong details in the authorization, not a customer complaint.
  • 75 days. Shorter than most processing-error codes.
  • The bank carries a real burden. It must explain why correct data would have led to a decline.

What Visa 12.7 means

Visa’s rule: either the authorization was obtained using invalid or incorrect data, or the merchant category code (MCC) in the authorization request doesn’t match the MCC in the settlement record for the same sale. An MCC is the four-digit code that tells banks what kind of business you are.

Visa’s rules treat an authorization as invalid if the request carried an incorrect transaction date, MCC, merchant or transaction type indicator, country or state code, or another required field. Unlike 12.5, the dispute covers the entire transaction amount.

What the customer told their bank

Usually nothing. This one starts with the bank. It must certify that it would have declined the authorization if the data had been correct, and explain why. Because no complaint drives it, a 12.7 can land on a sale that went perfectly.

The time limit

The cardholder’s bank has 75 calendar days from the date the transaction was processed.

Your own deadline is much shorter. Visa gives your bank (the acquirer) 30 calendar days from the dispute to respond. Your processor keeps part of that time, so the due date on your notice is the one that counts.

What kind of proof matters

Records showing the authorization didn’t contain invalid data, or a refund the bank didn’t account for. Most of this sits with your processor, so ask them for the authorization details early.

One common mistake

Ignoring how your account is set up. If your processor has you under the wrong MCC, or your settings change between authorization and settlement, you can collect these disputes without ever upsetting a customer. Check your MCC with your processor.

Dispute Daddy reads your notice, lines up the reason the customer gave against your own records, and builds the response. You review it, approve it and submit it. See how the Dispute Daddy Method works.
