Amex C14: paid by other means
C14 means the Card Member has shown Amex proof they paid for the same thing another way: cash, another card, or someone else. To keep the charge, show the other payment was for something else, or that the customer agreed to this card.
What C14 means
C14 means the Card Member showed Amex they already paid for this purchase some other way. Unlike many codes, this one starts with the customer’s proof, not just their word. Amex lists these causes:
- A card on file was billed instead of the payment method the customer gave at the time.
- The customer paid twice and the extra payment was never refunded.
- Someone else (another Card Member, a guest or a passenger) paid for it.
- The customer expected a third party, such as an insurer, to cover it.
What the customer told Amex
“I paid cash at the desk, and they charged my card too.” Or “My insurance was supposed to pay that.” Expect a receipt or statement attached to their side.
Time limit
Amex’s guide gives Card Members (Amex’s word for cardholders) up to 120 days from the transaction date to dispute most charges. Processor guides list this code under the same 120 days.
Your side of the clock is short. Amex’s own guide tells merchants to respond within 20 days. If you accept Amex through a processor such as Stripe or Square, the processor sets its own date, often a shorter one. The due date on your notice is the one that counts.
What proof matters
Amex accepts documentation showing the other payment wasn’t related to the disputed charge, proof the Card Member agreed to use this card for this charge, or proof a refund already offsets it. In plain terms: show that the two payments covered two different things, or that the customer told you to use this card.
Card on file is where this starts
Businesses that keep a card on file are most exposed. The customer pays at the counter, the balance runs automatically too, and now there are two payments for one bill. Practices and clinics see a version of this when a balance is paid by card and also by a financing plan or an insurer. Reconcile every payment against the invoice before you charge a stored card.
The common mistake
Fighting a true double payment. If the customer really paid twice, Amex’s guide says to process a correction or refund as soon as you spot it. A clean refund beats a losing dispute and a fee.
